The Department of Physiology offers graduate programs leading to either an M.S. or Ph.D.
degree. Graduate students may pursue a wide variety of research interests in physiology from the
molecular level to whole animals. The Physiology Department has faculty members conducting
research and publishing in the areas of cardiac, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, pulmonary
physiology, membrane transport, platelets, smooth muscle, and gap junctions. Graduate programs
with an emphasis on exercise physiology are provided in collaboration with the research faculty of
the Physical Education Department. Generally 2 years are required for completion of the M.S.
program, 4 to 5 years for the Ph.D.
