Once you realize that mathematics is not some game that people simply make up, but is about the patterns that arise in the world around us that the ‘unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences ‘ is not surprising. Mathematics is not about numbers. It is about life. It is about ideas. And far from being dull and sterile, as it is so often portrayed, it is full of creativity.
Once you view mathematics as a science of patterns and realize that it is an invisible universe that lies behind – or beneath – most things in the world, you may realize that the mathematician’s symbols are without a doubt both symbols of power and symbols of success.
